Untitled ‘Nothing But A Man’ Documentary project
This is a project in early development, being created in collaboration with Adam Lowery and Charles Dye. Lowery, a physicist who just recently received his doctorate, has for years held a deep love for and fascination with the 1964 film Nothing But A Man, partly due to the resonance he feels it carries for describing the life of his grandparents who, like the characters in Nothing But A Man, grew up Black in the Jim Crow South. Lowery forms an unusual cross-generational friendship with the now 94-year old director of Nothing But A Man, Michael Roemer, a Jewish filmmaker and Holocaust survivor now living in Vermont. This extraordinary friendship between a young Black physicist and an elderly Jewish filmmaker follows Lowery and Roemer as they embark on a journey of discovery crossing boundaries of race, class, geography, age, and questions of authorship and meaning-making through time.
